Iraqis have tried to stop the U.S. advance by charging with dump trucks, pickup trucks and buses filled with Iraqi soldiers firing their weapons, according to reports from CNN correspondent Walter Rodgers, embedded with the 3rd Squadron, 7th Cavalry, near the airport. The Army calls the soldier-filled vehicles "suicide buses," Rodgers said. U.S. tanks easily destroy the Iraqi vehicles, he said. At least one of the buses blew up as if it had explosives inside, Rodgers reported.

The Fedayin were out in their black uniforms and balaclavas. Men armed with Kalashnikovs were manning sandbag emplacements on the corners. I had never seen so many armed Iraqis on the streets. The Americans and British may say their motivation is to liberate the Iraqis, but these people gave every impression that they were prepared to die for their country.

Noch als einzige meldet derzeit ABC: U.S. ground forces have swept into Baghdad's international airport under cover of darkness, securing it with tanks and other armored units. They encountered almost no opposition from Iraqi forces. Reporting from the tarmac of Saddam International Airport, ABCNEWS' Bob Schmidt, embedded with the 3rd Infantry Division, said the airport was in pitch darkness as coalition tanks entered the facility. U.S. forces encountered very little Iraqi resistance, said Schmidt, although some units of the 3rd Infantry Division did encounter scattered firing by Iraqi foot soldiers and men in pickups.
