Trotz Lebensgefahr, das Flak-Feuer war deutlich zu hören, erfüllte er seine Pflicht. Heldenhaft. Beinahe. Denn der Mann war weder in Bagdad, noch im Irak. Er sendete aus einem Besenschrank in Swasiland.

GUIYANG, April 15 (Xinhuanet) -- Two large worm-like cysts, the first of their kind ever reported in China, have been taken out of the brain of a teenage girl. The surgery was conducted on Apr. 3 in the Guiyang Brain Hospital, in Guiyang, capital of southwest China's Guizhou Province. Surgeons found two cysts in the brain stem of 19-year-old Chen Li, who had been suffering from persistent headaches, poor vision and balance problems for almost a year. The cysts are about five centimeters long, with a diameter of 0.5 centimeter, according to hospital sources. In addition to some yellow liquid, a worm-like tissue was foundin each of the cyst, which has not yet been identified as belonging to any kind of parasite as yet, hospital sources said. More surprisingly, three pieces of hair were also found in the cysts. Wang Guihuai, a doctor from Beijing Tiantan Hospital, also the chief surgeon of the operation, said such an illness had been rarely seen in China and it would take some time for experts to give a definite diagnosis.

Der Wirkstoff in dem Impfstoff verhindert, dass Kokain ins Hirn gelangen kann. Das Vakzin, das bereits in ersten Versuchen an Kokainsüchtigen getestet wurde, soll verhindern, dass Abhängige nach einer Pause wieder in die volle Sucht zurückfallen, wenn sie das Bedürfnis nach der Droge verspüren.

Die ersten 23 Patienten, denen bei klinischen Versuchen der "Koffein-Cocktail" verabreicht wurde, tolerierten die Mischung gut, schreiben Forscher der University of Texas-Houston Medical School im Fachmagazin Stroke ("Schlägli"). Anders als bei vorangegangenen Tierversuchen konnte die Dosis der Kombination sogar verringert werden. Noch ist unklar, wie die Wirkstofflösung "Coffeinol" das Gehirn schützt. Ratten-Versuche zeigten bereits, dass sich nach der Injektion von Coffeinol die Schlaganfall-Schäden im Gehirn bis zu 80 Prozent reduzierten. Nämlich dann, wenn die Kombination innerhalb von drei Stunden nach der Blockierung der Blutversorgung ins Gehirn verabreicht wurde. "Kaffee oder Alkohol alleine sind kein Schutz, aber die Kombination war wirksam", erklärte Studienautor und Neurologe James C. Grotta.
